FEM welcomes the military’s withdrawal today of criminal complaints against eight journalists, journalist sources and human rights defenders.

The criminal provisions in the Penal Code, Telecommunications Law, and Unlawful Association Law, used to charge the eight people are not acceptable under international standards on the right to freedom of expression.

The eight people due for release include Wai Phyo and Kyaw Min Swe, the editors of newspapers Daily Eleven and the Voice Daily.

The military said in a statement to the Press Council that their withdrawal of the criminal complaints was an act of “forgiveness” to cooperate with the public interest.

Myanmar remains one of the most risky countries in the world to work as a journalist, and has a range of vague and undemocratic laws that journalists and other people face when exercising their right to freedom of expression. In addition to laws, journalists also face non-legal pressure such as threats to their job security when writing about certain issues.

7. Htin Kyaw aka Kyaw Htin,  charged under Penal Code 505(b)
8. Wai Yan Thein aka Victor, Vice Chair of Students’ Union, Taungoo, charged under Penal Code 505(b)

လွတ်လပ်သော ထုတ်ဖော်ပြောဆိုခြင်း မြန်မာသည် ယနေ့ တပ်မတော်က ထုတ်ပြန်ကြေညာလိုက်သည့် သတင်းမီဒီယာသမားများ ၊ သတင်းရင်းမြစ်များနှင့် လူ့အခွင့်အရေး လှုပ်ရှားသူများ အပေါ်  ရာဇဝတ်ကြောင်းအရ တရားစွဲဆိုထားခြင်းအား ရုပ်သိမ်းလိုက်ခြင်း ကို ကြိုဆိုပါသည်။

နိုင်ငံတကာကလက်ခံထားသည့် လွတ်လပ်စွာထုတ်ဖော်ရေးသားပြောဆိုခွင့် စံနှုန်းများနှင့် ဆန့်ကျင်၍ ရာဇသတ်ကြီး ဥပဒေပုဒ်မများ ၊ ဆက်သွယ်ရေးဥပဒေ နှင့် မတရားအသင်းဆက်သွယ်မှုအက်ဥပဒေ ပုဒ်မတို့ကို အသုံးပြုကာ ယင်းသို့တရားစွဲဆို အရေးယူခြင်းကို ကျွန်ုပ်တို့အနေဖြင့် လက်ခံနိုင်ခြင်းမရှိပါ။

ယခုအမှုရုပ်သိမ်းလိုက်သဖြင့် လွတ်မြောက်လာ မည့်သူများတွင် အလဲဗင်း သတင်းစာ အယ်ဒီတာ ကိုဝေဖြိုး နှင့် The Voice သတင်းစာအယ်ဒီတာ ကိုကျော်မင်းဆွေတို့ ပါဝင်သည်။

တပ်မတော်မှ သတင်းမီဒီယာကောင်စီသို့ပေးပို့ခဲ့သော အကြောင်းကြားစာတွင် နိုင်ငံတော်နှင့် ပြည်သူတို့၏အကျိူးစီးပွားကို လက်တွဲလုပ်ဆောင်နိုင်ရန် အလို့ငှာ တပ်မတော်အနေဖြင့် ယခင်ကဖြစ်ပျက်ခဲ့မှုများအား သင်ပုန်းချေ၍ တိုင်ကြားစွဲဆိုထားသည့် အမှုများကို ရုတ်သိမ်းခဲ့ခြင်းဖြစ်ကြောင်း ဖော်ပြထားသည်။

မြန်မာနိုင်ငံသည် သတင်းထောက်များ နေထိုင်အလုပ်လုပ်ကိုင်ရန် အန္တရာယ်အရှိဆုံး နိုင်ငံများတွင် တစ်ခုအပါအဝင်ဖြစ်သည့်အပြင် ဝေဝါးရှုပ်ထွေးသော ၊ ဒီမိုကရေစီစနစ်နှင့်  မလျော်ညီသည့် ဥပဒေမျများစွာ တည်ရှိသည့် နိုင်ငံဖြစ်သည့်အတွက် သတင်းထောက်များ သာမက သာမာန်ပြည်သူလူထုအနေဖြင့်  ၎င်းတို့၏ လွတ်လပ်စွာပြောဆိုရေးသားခွင့်ကို ကျင့်သုံးခြင်းဖြင့် အရေးယူခံရနိုင်ဖွယ်ရှိသည့် အခြေအနေရှိနေဆဲဖြစ်သည်။ ဥပဒေများအပြင် ဂျာနယ်လစ်များ အနေဖြင့် တချို့ပြသနာရပ်များကို ရေးသားဖော်ပြသည့်အခါ ၄င်းတို့၏ အလုပ်အကိုင်တည်မြဲလုံခြုံရေးကိုထိပါးသော ခြိမ်းခြောက်မှုကဲ့သို့ ဥပဒေမဟုတ်သည့် ဖိအားများကိုလည်း ရင်ဆိုင်ကြုံတွေ့ရလေ့ရှိသည်။
