The 2017 Global Corruption Barometer gives evidence about corruption in Myanmar.

Overall, 60% of people in Myanmar think that corruption has stayed the same or increased since the NLD took power. 38% think the NLD is handling corruption badly or very badly.

Participants believed that the most corrupt people in Myanmar are:

1. Police - 47% believed that most or all are corrupt
2. Judges - 40% believed that most or all are corrupt
3. Tax officials - 30% believed that most or all are corrupt
4. Government officials - 26% believed that most or all are corrupt
5. Township-level elected officials - 22% believed that most or all are corrupt
6. President's office officials - 20% believed that most or all are corrupt
7. Business leaders - 20% believed that most or all are corrupt
8. MPs - 17% believed that most or all are corrupt
9. Religious leaders - 2% believed that most or all are corrupt

Of participants:

• 49% paid a bribe to the police
• 40% paid a bribe in relation to their ID cards
• 39% paid a bribe in a court
• 21% paid a bribe in a hospital
• 20% paid a bribe for their utilities
• 16% paid a bribe in a government school

62% of participants said that ordinary people cannot do anything to stop corruption. When asked for the reason why they did not report the bribe:

• 29% said that nothing would be done
• 24% said that they would be afraid of the consequences
• 16% said that they do not know who to report the bribe to, or how
• 12% said that corruption is normal

However, 70% of participants did say that they would be happy to spend a whole day in court to give evidence in a corruption case.
