Mark Human Rights Day with silent strike

The Myanmar public will mark International Human Rights Day on 10 December 2021 with a massive nationwide silent strike.

Businesses will close, civil society will shut, and people will stay at home to remember all those who have been killed  since 1 February 2021 and to mark ongoing gross and systematic human rights violations.

FEM will join the silent strike and urges everyone to join us in observing the day.

The right to freedom of expression includes the right not to express ourselves if we so choose. The silent strike is not an act of censorship and does not endorse military teaching that silence is good behaviour. It is a day-long period of protest and collective power intended to show public disapproval. FEM urges the public to continue speaking out from 11 December.

The public previously carried out a nationwide silent strike on 24 March, showing mass disapproval of the military’s power grab in the face of the military’s claims to have succeeded in taking over.
